As Charleston has continued to attract newcomers, the West Ashley area has become increasingly attractive to those relocating into the area and for residents of Charleston looking for a lower-cost of housing than what they will find in Mount Pleasant. West Ashley can broadly be categorized into two areas: The area inside of I-526 which tends to be made-up of older homes built from anywhere in the early 1900's through the 1990's. The area outside of I-526 reaching out to Bee's Ferry Road and also incorporating the Glenn McConnell Parkway has seen tremendous growth over the last ten to fifteen years. As West Ashley outside of I-526 started to grow, a new master planned development known as Carolina Bay was developed bounded by Savannah Highway on the South, Bee's Ferry on the West and Glenn McConnel on the North.
