As Charleston has continued to attract newcomers, the West Ashley area has become increasingly attractive to those relocating into the area and for residents of Charleston looking for a lower-cost of housing than what they will find in Mount Pleasant. West Ashley can broadly be categorized into two areas: The area inside of I-526 which tends to be made-up of older homes built from anywhere in the early 1900's through the 1990's. The area outside of I-526 reaching out to Bee's Ferry Road and also incorporating the Glenn McConnell Parkway has seen tremendous growth over the last ten to fifteen years. Most of the housing stock is newer and their are many condo options and apartments available as well.
As West Ashley outside of I-526 started to grow, a new master planned development known as Carolina Bay was developed bounded by Savannah Highway on the South, Bee's Ferry on the West and Glenn McConnel on the North. The development was originally started by Pulte/Centex homes. There are jogging trails, neighborhoods in varying price ranges, and amenity centers over the development that incorporates over 1000 acres.
